History: RidingClasses

Preview of version: 1

One of our goals is to promote "bicycle literacy" by getting more people cycling safely, legally, and often — to improve safety and respect on the road for all. Everyone can help achieve this just by taking one of these interesting, fun courses, and enhance their own safety and enjoyment as transportation, recreation, or fitness cyclists in the process.

We start at the very beginning:

Once you've mastered that, you're ready for League of American Bicyclists (LAB) training, which will help anyone to:
  • Ride more safely, comfortably, and confidently in all traffic situations
  • Speak or write more knowledgeably about safe cycling and cyclists' rights
  • Have credentials to bolster their position in legal actions
  • Go on to become a League Certified Instructor (LCI) themselves — to teach safe-cycling classes on their own, or through the OCBC.

There are several "Bike Ed" courses available: Road 1, the basic vehicular cycling course (external link), Kids I (for those under 10 years old with their parents) and Kids II (the basis of our Earn a Bike course), and others.

Road I and Kids II courses are held (rain or shine) at the Co-op in monthly series of three, three-hour classes (see the schedule below). The course uses slides, video, discussion, and, of course, plenty of riding (bring your own bike, or use a co-op loaner); with a written and on-road test at the end, to earn a certificate from the League of American Bicyclists.

The full course of three classes is $45 (members may pay half of this with volunteer hours), which includes materials, snacks, and a three-month trial membership for non members.

Road 1 and Kids 2 classes are held from 9AM to noon on the last three Saturdays of each month, April through October; and from 6PM to 9PM on the last three Tuesdays of each month, May through August (for daylight). Classes must be taken in order, so if you can't make a Saturday morning class you can make it up on Tuesday evening (or vice-versa in July, 2005), or you can join either of the next month's classes, space permitting. Please call the shop, 216 830 2667 if you are confused.

Our ten instructors received their LCI training in an intensive, 25 hour, weekend seminar on June 4, 5 and 6th 2004, at the co-op. The instructor was Steve Schmitt, from the Coalition for Appropriate Transportation (external link) in Bethlehem PA. The entire group was extremely impressed with Steve's presentation, and were all very excited to begin teaching at the end of it. You can read, and join our discussion about this program on the forum under "LCI Discussions".

We often present Kids 1 and other programs to Scouts, Rec. Centers and community groups. We will be happy to customize classes like these to your particular needs, and present them at you location: please email any questions to
