We have balance bikes for loan and can demonstrate their use for free, or charge a nominal fee to provide more instruction, including everything in [http://bikeleague.org/programs/education/courses.php#kids1|Kids 1].
Once you've mastered that, you're ready for the League of American Bicyclists' (LAB) Bike Ed training, which will help anyone to:
* Ride more safely, comfortably, and confidently in all traffic situations
- * Speak or write more knowledgeably about safe cycling and cyclists' rights * Have credentials to bolster their position in legal actions

* Go on to become a League Certified Instructor (LCI) themselves -- to teach safe-cycling classes on their own, or through the OCBC.
There are several "Bike Ed" courses available: [http://bikeleague.org/programs/education/courses.php|Road 1], the basic vehicular cycling course, Kids I (for those under 10 years old with their parents) and Kids II (the basis of our Earn a Bike riding instruction), and others.
- Road I and Kids II courses are held together (rain or shine) at the Co-op on the first Saturday of every month, from 9AM to 5PM. The course uses slides, video, discussion, and, of course, plenty of riding (bring your own bike, or use a co-op loaner); with a written and on-road test at the end, to earn a certificate from the League of American Bicyclists.
+ Our Bicycle Drivers' Ed class is the riding portion of Road I and Kids II, held together. The mechanical and bike fit concepts in the Road 1 course are taught in the first of our [http://www.ohiocitycycles.org/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=ShopClasses|shop classes], so taking that class is required to earn a Road 1 certificate, as we will simply review that material, and concentrate on riding skills in our Bicycle Drivers' Ed class.
The mechanical class may be taken anytime before your riding class, with no pre-registration needed, to make scheduling more flexible. See the [http://www.ohiocitycycles.org/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=ShopClasses|shop classes] page for dates and times. /> Bicycle Drivers' Ed is usually held at the Co-op from 9AM to 4PM on the second Saturday of every month from April through October, rain or shine (riding portions may be postponed in case of dangerous weather).
The class uses slides, video, discussion, and plenty of riding (bring your own bike or use a co-op loaner) to help all students -- within their own comfort levels -- gain skills for whatever traffic situations they choose. The class includes on-road and written tests at the end, to earn a certificate from the League of American Bicyclists; and a copy of [http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/|Street Smarts] for future reference.
This course is appropriate for cyclists over 10 years old, of all abilities, who can ride for at least one hour (or five miles) at one time. Students under 18 must have a signed parental release, those under 14 must be accompanied by a paid adult student.

+ __* Students who have not taken the shop class__ portion may join the riding class for $50, but will not take the written test or get the graduation certificate, and may complete those requirements within two months, with any bike-purchase or membership discount adjusted accordingly. If this is confusing, please call. Basically, we want to make it easy for anyone to take this important class, and will work out the details equitably.
