Bicycle Drivers' Education

(next regularly-scheduled classes begin in May)

From balancing a two-wheeler to riding in rush-hour traffic, every cyclist can learn something from others; we cover most topics in the courses listed here, or can customize one to fit your needs.

This is the easiest way to learn, or teach, this basic skill.

Once you've mastered that, you're ready for League of American Bicyclists (LAB) training, which will help anyone to:
  • Ride more safely, comfortably, and confidently in all traffic situations
  • Speak or write more knowledgeably about safe cycling and cyclists' rights
  • Have credentials to bolster their position in legal actions
  • Go on to become a League Certified Instructor (LCI) themselves — to teach safe-cycling classes on their own, or through the OCBC.

There are several "Bike Ed" courses available: Road 1 (external link), the basic vehicular cycling course, Kids I (for those under 10 years old with their parents) and Kids II (the basis of our Earn a Bike riding instruction), and others.

Our Bicycle Drivers' Ed class (LAB's Road I and Kids II, held together) takes place at the Co-op every month between April and November, rain or shine (riding portions may be postponed in case of dangerous weather). Because the mechanical and bike fit concepts of safe cycling in the Road 1 course are taught in our http://www.ohiocitycycles.org/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=ShopClasses|Repair (external link) Intro and Flats] classes, taking those classes (anytime before your Road 1 riding class) is required, as we will simply review that material, so we can concentrate on riding skills.

This also makes the riding class more flexible, and three hours shorter!

Bicycle Drivers' Ed is held on the second Saturday of every month (third in October), from 9AM to 4PM. The course uses slides, video, discussion, and, of course, plenty of riding (bring your own bike or use a co-op loaner) to help all students — within their own comfort levels — gain a better understanding of how they can ride more safely and effectively in whatever traffic situations they choose. The day includes a written and on-road test at the end, to earn a certificate from the League of American Bicyclists, and a copy of Street Smarts for future reference.

This course is appropriate for cyclists over 10 years old, of all abilities, who can ride for at least one hour (or five miles) at one time. Students under 18 must be accompanied by a paid adult student.

The cost is $65 (or $25 with each bike purchase, or for members, who may pay half of this with volunteer hours), which includes the prerequisite Fit and Flat class, all materials, and a light breakfast at 8:30AM. Lunch is up to each individual when we stop at the West Side Market.

Please pay in advance on our payment page (external link), and send an email indicating which month you are signing up for; or with a check, including a phone number in case class will be canceled, which will happen if there are not at least three students signed up by the Wednesday before class.

We often present Kids 1 and other programs to Scouts, Rec. Centers and community groups. We will be happy to customize classes like these to your particular needs, and present them at you location: please email any questions to education@ohiocitycycles.org.

Bicycle Drivers' Education

Road 1 classes in 2007 were held on the second Saturday of every month from April through September, but for 2008 we plan to switch to Sundays for a more relaxed learning environment, as the shop is very busy on Saturdays. Please contact us to let us know what you think of this idea.

(prerequisite shop class not required if you don't want the LAB certificate: see * below)

From balancing a two-wheeler, to riding in rush-hour traffic, every cyclist can learn something from others; we cover most topics in the courses listed here, or can customize one to fit your needs.

  • If you're really a beginner, How to ride a two-wheeler is the easiest way to learn, or teach, this basic skill. We have balance bikes for loan and can demonstrate their use for free, or charge a nominal fee to provide more instruction, including everything in Kids 1 (external link).

Once you've mastered that, you're ready for the League of American Bicyclists' (LAB) Bike Ed training, which will help anyone to:
  • Ride more safely, comfortably, and confidently in all traffic situations
  • Speak or write more knowledgeably about cyclists' rights and safety
  • Have formal training to bolster their position in legal actions
  • Go on to become a League Certified Instructor (LCI) themselves — to teach safe-cycling classes on their own, or through the OCBC.

There are several "Bike Ed" courses available: Road 1 (external link), the basic vehicular cycling course, Kids I (for those under 10 years old with their parents) and Kids II (the basis of our Earn a Bike riding instruction), and others.

Our Bicycle Drivers' Ed class is the riding portion of Road I and Kids II, held together. The mechanical and bike fit concepts in the Road 1 course are taught in the first of our shop classes, so taking that class is required to earn a Road 1 certificate, as we will simply review that material, and concentrate on riding skills in our Bicycle Drivers' Ed class.

The mechanical class may be taken anytime before your riding class, with no pre-registration needed, to make scheduling more flexible. See the shop classes page for dates and times.

This course is appropriate for cyclists over 10 years old, of all abilities, who can ride for at least one hour (or five miles) at one time. Students under 18 must have a signed parental release, those under 14 must be accompanied by a paid adult student.

The cost is $75 (or $25 with a bike purchase, or for members) and may be paid with volunteer credits. This includes the prerequisite mechanical class, all materials, and a light breakfast at 8:30AM. Lunch is up to each individual when we stop at the West Side Market.

* Students who have not taken the shop class portion may join the riding class for $50, but will not take the written test or get the graduation certificate, and may complete those requirements within two months, with any bike-purchase or membership discount adjusted accordingly. If this is confusing, please call. Basically, we want to make it easy for anyone to take this important class, and will work out the details equitably.
