Ohio City Bicycle Co-op presents the second annual exhibit Pedaling Art, a celebration of bicycle art and culture, May 18 through May 26. The fundraiser exhibition includes visual art in a variety of media, as well as wearable art and crafts, all of which are made from recycled bike parts or have a bike focus. Cleveland Bicycle Week is May 14-18, 2012 (coinciding with the League of American Bicyclists’ Bike-to-Work Week), culminating in Bike-to-Work Day and the Pedaling Art opening reception on Friday, May 18. The Ohio City Bicycle Co-op (OCBC) will provide free, secure bicycle valet parking for those who opt to ride. A portion of Pedaling Art sales will be donated to OCBC to help support their mission to promote cycling in Greater Cleveland. The opening night will also feature food, drinks and music. Pedaling Art will be open for two Saturdays, with the co-op continuing its programs, members shop time, retails sales and a social ride.
May 5th, 2012 Saturday Social Ride: bridges & bike access
Held on the first Saturday of every month, the Social ride is a short, easy, sight-seeing bicycle ride in Cleveland's Flats and Downtown neighborhoods. The ride is free (donations are welcome!), and loaner bikes are available. (More info on our Saturday Social Ride is here).
May is Bike Month, so we'll visit local bridges -- the "pinch points" for cross-town cycling routes -- and examine their history, engineering, and "bike-friendliness." We'll have some local experts along, and promote upcoming, bridge-related events and plans; like Ingenuity Fest, the Innerbelt Bridge and recent changes to that project, and (for cyclists) the related Abbey Ave. and Hope Bridge improvements. We'll certainly also look at the Columbus Rd. bridge, slated for renovation in 2013, and the Center St. bridge, at the narrowest point in the ship channel, near where Moses Cleaveland allegedly landed on the bank of the Cuyahoga River.
Bike cart project
OCBC has been designing and building cargo trailers intermittently for some time, as a way to re-use bike parts and provide low-cost carrying capacity for cyclists. With the leadership of Barton Hiatt, this project is now solidly underway, with prototypes in use and production methods documented. Any volunteers are welcome to help in this effort, to learn some useful metal-working skills and earn volunteer credits while helping provide OCBC with another earned income source, and the cycling community with a robust alternative to re-purposed kid-trailers!
Barton will be leading a team on this project every Wed. evening -- to join, please sign up here.
